{"id":711,"date":"2019-08-20T00:00:25","date_gmt":"2019-08-20T00:00:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/139.91.162.68\/?p=711"},"modified":"2021-01-24T12:58:47","modified_gmt":"2021-01-24T12:58:47","slug":"our-latest-take-on-neural-computations-of-the-brain-is-out-now-nature-communications","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dendrites.gr\/?p=711","title":{"rendered":"Our latest take on neural computations of the brain is out now | Nature Communications"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"post-head\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"article-desc\">\n<h3><strong>Dendritic non-linearities as\u00a0chiefs in command<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>It\u2019s been 16 years since Dr. Poirazi, head of the lab, got to publish her research on the non-linear functions of pyramidal neurons; a theoretical prediction that, however prominent may be now, was against all odds and dogmas.<\/p>\n<p>Despite its success, the concept has yet to escape the realm of excitatory neurons, leaving their inhibitory counterparts rather neglected.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Is it time to cross the boundaries?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Alexandra Tzilivaki, first author of our new\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41467-019-11537-7.pdf\">publication<\/a>\u00a0in\u00a0<em>Nature Communications<\/em>, knew she was onto something when her interneuron models of Fast Spiking Basket Cells (FSBCs) captured most of the reported variance when supra- and sub- linear dendrites\u00a0were to be taken into account.<\/p>\n<p>In close collaboration with her supervisor, Dr. Poirazi, and post-doc researcher Dr. Kastellakis, she put the surprising finding to the test\u00a0by using:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>morpologically \/ biophysically detailed single-cell models,<\/li>\n<li>reduced models in the formulation of Artificial Neural Networks,<\/li>\n<li>and realistic networks of the hippocampus and the preforntal cortex.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Challenging the point-neuron dogma<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Under the scrutiny of the above methods, Alexandra was able to prove\u00a0that FSBCs act as 2-layer neural networks rather than point neurons, and, therefore, realize significant computational gains for the brain networks they&#8217;re embedded in.<\/p>\n<p>This new line of work provides testable predictions, while expanding on community\u2019s understanding of how the brain makes efficient use of limited resources to execute complex cognitive processes\u00a0<em>(i.e., learning, memory, etc.)<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><em>Tzilivaki, A., Kastellakis, G., &amp; Poirazi, P.
